Most of the Chettiyar’s house in Chettinad consists of thousands of windows, hundreds of wooden pillars, door frames with Gajalakshmi who symbolize Goddess of wealth and a Kumbam(brass pot) with sprouting leaves engraved on them to symbolize wealth. Some buildings has a scene-by-scene narration of Mahabharatha and Ramayana in its wooden panels and walls. Some mansions are filled up with pillars of different materials such as wood, stone, plaster and metal. These pillars are coated with egg white stand tall in marvelously big dinner hall called Kalyana Kottahai. These houses may also contain raised platform known as ‘Thinnai’ used to protect from sun and rain.

Fortunately my Companies admn officer belongs to Karaikudi, i had visited and enjoyed their culture a few times.
The house which is shown in the website you are reffering http://www.karaikudi.com/chettinadhouse.… is a beautiful building which i have visited a couple of times, earlier it was rented to film makers and now a days they have restricted as quiet a few damages were made.
I was so attarcted towards the richness of the buildings there and I HAVE USED THESE ATHANGUDI TILES (used in these bunglows ) when i built my home. the greatness of these tiles is that they are handmade, they can make any design on the top occording to purchasers choice!! no compression or machines are used to make these tiles.
Also i ordered & purchased the main entrance doors and frames from here with Gajalakshmi on top of the door and frame. wow!
I also tried to adopt the egg paint technique to the pillars i have at home, but was a failure as i couldn't employ a right person with right technique to this.
